A deranged serial killer called Bernie has been
released from the asylum under custody of his father.
When Bernie and his father decide to kill a family,
Bernie's father dies. Bernie figures that the best
thing to do now is to kill off a couple of people
who are training to become camp councillors nearby.
Will any of the poor campers survive or will they
all fall victim of the infamous moonstalker?

I had heard very little about this movie before I
started watching it so I didn't really know what to
expect. The movie starts off with a couple of
camping teens who quickly get butchered by an
unseen killer. Then we get introduced to a family
who are camping. Well, the family gets killed off
pretty quickly and the deranged killer Berny is
free to start his killing rampage among some camp
councillors. The first half of the movie is pretty
badly put together as I didn't really get what
purpose the family served for the movie but when
it gets going, the plot is actually pretty good
and follows the classic Friday the 13th build-up.

Speaking of Friday the 13th, this movie must've been
heavily inspired by that flick since there are
quite a few things that are similar (though I won't
be going into any details in my review). Now I
know what you're thinking, "inspired by" is just
a fancier way of saying "rips off", but I definitely
wouldn't call this a rip-off since it has a whole
lot more originality in it than many other 80s
camp slashers did. The movie is a mixed bag but
I couldn't help enjoying it for what it was. For
a slasher fan like myself, this turned out to be
a surprisingly fulfilling flick.

After I finished watching this, I checked it up on
the internet and man, it almost seems impossible to
find this on both VHS and DVD. Luckily, I found
myself a brilliant bootleg DVD with excellent
picture and sound quality so I'm guessing that
helped to give me a good impression of the movie.
Overall, Moonstalker is nothing that we haven't
seen before but it still is a pretty enjoyable
slasher flick, though I'm sure many people must
hate it because it's definitely only a movie for
pure slasher fans.

We get a severed head, severed legs, an arm hacked
off, a knife in ones forehead, an impalement through
ones stomach and more! Surprisingly gory, why isn't
this more well-known than it is?

While the movie might be a case of "inspired by",
the soundtrack is definitely a case of rip-off. The
theme melody is almost identical to John Carpenter's
Halloween theme. I didn't really mind though as it
set the right atmosphere for the movie.

I have very mixed feelings about this flick and it's
definitely not a movie for everyone. However, if
you're a slasher fan like myself, you will most
likely find it just as entertaining as I did. Don't
expect an original masterpiece though.
