A woman wakes up in a hospital after a drug dealer beat
her unconscious and pushed her into a marsh. She soon
learns that she's been pregnant for ten weeks and that
her doctor is very concerned about her keeping the baby.
After a while she starts seeing strange things at the
hospital and quickly moves to the conclusion that she's
seeing the ghost of a dead woman. But something's not
right and there seems to be something that the hospital
is keeping from her.

I bought the Thai DVD release of this movie a while back
but never bothered watching it. The other day when I was
looking over the current Hong Kong box-office chart I saw
that there was a new movie on the chart which sounded like
it was horror, called The Unborn. So I decide to get some
information about this new horrormovie and I learn that
it's actually just a new title for The Mother. Finally the
movie had really gotten my interest. The first impression
I got when I started watching it was that I was in for a
ghost story in tradition of The Ring, only a bit stylised
for the teens. The first impressions are rarely right but
this is one of those times when it was right.
Intira Jaroenpura returns to the horrormovie world after
the Thai smash hit Nang Nak. Since the entire movie surrounds
her, the movie was depending on how she acted. She does not
let us down. Intira plays a credible part and she always
seems natural with her role, despite the fact that she's
a drug addict in the movie. You could tell that the director
didn't have much to work with in this movie as he seems to
have cut back on spending money on short special effect
scenes such as when one falls of a building. It works pretty
well anyway though.
At the end of the day I thought that it was a pretty good
movie but it was a bit too drawn-out for me. After one
hour I just felt that I wanted it to end really. It's a
good and creepy ghost story but there's not enough going
on to keep you interested and the clichéd and predictable
twists in the end just felt pathetic.

Some blood coughing and fake looking foetus removals.

Quite a lot of club music and some pretty effective and
eerie background music composed with violins, bass and
strings. Works pretty well.

The Mother was good for a couple of scares and jumps but
in the end it really wasn't a very good horrormovie. My
opinion is that they should've tried to make it a bit
shorter and remove silly twists that appear every now
and then in the movie. Recommended for fans of Asian
horrormovies since it does have quite a few similarities
with The Ring (though this girl leaks a whole lot more).
