Helen is still struggling to forget that her
mother died sixteen years ago. She works as an
actress and has just been cast in a play but
soon enough the actors start to get killed off
one by one by a mysterious figure wearing black
gloves. Is Helen responsible for these murders
or is someone else trying to make her believe
that she's psychotic?

Australia isn't exactly famous for making good
slasher films even though Wolf Creek helped
their reputation a whole lot. Having seen
movies like Houseboat Horror and The Day After
Halloween, I really wasn't looking forward to
watching this slasher. Well while Nightmares
isn't quite as abysmal as the mentioned titles,
it's not a whole lot better either.
The story focuses on Helen, a confused actress
who's still trying to get over her mothers
tragic death. She's cast in this cheesy play
by a very well-known director but soon enough,
someone starts killing off the cast with broken
pieces of glass. Why the killer uses this weapon?
Well, Helen's mother died in a car crash where
her throat was slit open by the shattered car
window and I have to say that I actually found
the murder weapon quite clever.
I've seen enough of these theatre house slasher
flicks to say that it's a bad concept to begin
with. Stagefright and The Clown At Midnight are
in my opinion the best ones but it's really
rare to find a good theatre house slasher and
Nightmares isn't one of the better ones either.
I think that every Australian slasher fan out
there should check this one out but unless you
have some special reason to watch it, you might
as well go rent Stagefright or The Clown At
Midnight instead as they are much better.

Only lots of stabbings with a piece of shattered
glass. Never feels very repetitive though.

Oh my god, the score in Nightmares feels like it
was taken right out of Psycho with slick violin
music and some nice piano music. Could have been
a whole lot more original.

Nightmares isn't quite as bad as the other Aussie
80's slashers but it isn't a very good one either.
Luckily, it's not very long but unless you're
from Australia, I don't see any reason to why
anyone would want to watch this. Very forgettable.
