Many hundred years ago, Nikos the barbarian was executed in Romania after
having slaughtered hundreds of innocent people. When an art gallery has
Romanian horrors as a theme, Nikos is accidentally awaken back from the
dead and starts a new massacre, only this time it's in Manhattan. Trapped
inside the art gallery, some random people now have to try to escape but
Nikos has made sure that it won't be that easy. Will they succeed or will
they all have to suffer a gruesome dead.

Nikos The Impaler is the latest horrorflick from the German splatter
director Andreas Schnaas. This is the first film that Schnaas has shot
in America and you can tell that a lot of work was put into it. Still,
I personally prefer Schnaas previous work, Demonium, even if that wasn't
exactly a masterpiece either. Nikos is basically a brainless lowbudget
splattermovie with no real plot. It's just people getting slaughtered, one
of the most uncreative slashers I have ever seen. I didn't expect much from
it as it is an unofficial Violent Shit sequel, 4th actually, and if you
compare it to the other three VS movies, this is definitely the best one.

Even though the budget was obviously low as hell, I think that Schnaas
managed to do the best with what he had. Schnaas isn't exactly my favourite
director but he is talented since he manages to pull movies like this of
with no budget. The video however is cropped badly on the DVD and it's
not rare that you only see half of the actors faces because of the bad
cropping. Not even anamorphic transfer was worth this, I'd rather watch a
full screen version that hadn't been cropped.

The acting is one of the better things in the movie despite the fact that
some of the cast didn't fit in. There are three or four people who are
really bad actors but they only have one or two dialogues, I'm especially
thinking of the woman leading the art exhibition. Then there are some
actors who are only in the movie for 2 or 3 minutes, which are brilliant
actors from what we get to see. Take for example the pink haired girl in
the video store, she was excellent.

I'm still not sure if this movie deserved two stars but I thought it was
better to give it a better rating than a worse than it deserved. Nikos
was obviously made for the splatterfans and gorehounds so I do think it
deserves some respect since I prefer creepy movies rather than gory.
It wasn't exactly my kind of movie but I am absolutely positive that many
horrorfans out there will love this.

This breaks records in slasher history when it comes to the gore. No less
than six people get their heads dismembered in a brutal and gory way. One
also gets half of the head chopped off. We get a lot of gory intestines
and an arm ripped off. Some bloody impalings and a very cool scene where
a woman is split in half, vertically are also some of the main treats.
That's still not all of it though, I assure you, this one is gory enough
to fulfil any gorehounds dreams and it looks realistic aswell so kudos
to the special effects designers.

Here's where it goes totally wrong, this is the main thing that pulls the
movie down. There's a lot of amateuristic rock or pop music in unnecessary
scenes where I'd rather have some creepy strings or just complete silence.
Boy was I sick of rock music after watching this movie. Anyway, we also
get some techno music and some really cheesy background music, which sounds
as if it was made with midi or something. But worst of it all was the terrible
muzak played in the art gallery scenes.

Not really my kind of movie as I thought it didn't have enough of a story
and an unnecessary amount of gore in it. I do consider it to be a decent
movie though since it had alright acting and some unforgettable scenes
which might come of a bit cheesy to some people. It's a must for any
gorefan but if you enjoy creepy movies this is not the way to go.
