A submarine gets a big problem, literarily, when a giant octopus
decides to crash the party. As if that wasn't problem enough for
the submarine crew, they are also transporting a deadly felon.
When the felon finally escapes, there are no safe places remaining
as terror is waiting for them from both inside and outside, the
question is, will any of them survive and if not, what will be
their death?

Opening as an actionthriller, this underwater sea creature movie
fails to deliver what we're expecting. The octopus plays a very
small part in the movie and is basically only in it for the last
twenty minutes or so. This is a prime example of what you should
not do with CGI effects when you don't have enough money. I had
to check Willie Botha's history as a special effects designer after
watching this and it turns out that he was the one in charge of
the special effects for Spiders 2 aswell. As you might already
know, the special effects for S2 were just about as bad as they
could get, the spiders basically floated on the screen. Next time
I watch a creature feature I will be sure to see who was in charge
of the special effects department.
The acting was pretty average from almost the entire cast with
one exception from Carolyn Lowery who gives us a dreadfully
unconvincing performance. The directing was pretty bad aswell
and in many of the action scenes it was almost impossible not
to tell that it was a studio. All they basically did in those
scenes was shake exaggeratedly much with the camera and splash
lots of water on the screen.
I've seen this poor excuse for a horrormovie three times now
and even though that it's really bad, it's still a lot better
than the sequel which was released a year later. At least this
one had an entertainment factor of some kind, but I still thought
it was very drawn-out and it's hard to stay awake for a hundred
minutes of octopus terror. No thanks, I'd rather watch Jaws again.

Only an unimpressive CGI impalement by the octopus.

Well, considering this is more of an actionthriller than a
horrormovie I guess it's not a big surprise that the soundtrack
follows the same path. However, for it's intents and purposes
it works. There was also some dance music and calypso music
going on on the boat but nothing very noticeable.

Octopus isn't exactly a good movie but it's an all right waste
of time... at least the first time you watch it. There are
surprisingly enough not many horrormovies about killer squids
and octopuses out there and I guess this is one of the better
ones available so if you're in the mood for an octopus
movie, this is your definite choice.
