Many years ago, orang minyak terrorized a small village
in Malaysia. They managed to stop him just in time and
lock him inside a bottle. Unfortunately, the bottle has
been found and orang minyak has once again been set
free to terrorize the small community by raping the
local virgins. Will anyone be able to stop him this time?

Oh dear lord, what was this? Orang Minyak is basically
a remake from a Malaysian movie from the 50s if I have
understood everything right, and man they haven't come
far since then judging by this movie. On the other hand,
Orang Minyak is one of the least successful Malay horror
flicks ever - and considering how poor it was, I'm not
surprised. When the movie was finally over I had to
lie down for a while since I had such cramps in my
stomach after having laughed so hard at... well...
everything really. I'll get deeper into its flaws
later but let's recap the plot shall we?

The orang minyak is a Malay legend and translates into
the oily man. According to the legend, this slippery
spirit has a pact with the devil and to win the heart
of a beautiful woman, he has to rape 21 virgins in
only one week. This is only according to one legend
however as there are several different versions of it.
This is the version that this movie uses. So where's
the terror in that you ask. Well, there is none. Why
this has been marketed as a horror flick is just
beyond me. It's about an oily naked man who hypnotizes
women with his red glowing eyes and then rapes them.
Though, since Malay censorship would never allow him
to be fully naked, he wears a rubber suit for most of
the time (that's not even oily-looking). So basically
we have a oily man in fetish clothes raping women,
hmmm, haven't I seen this before? Well, either way,
I'm sure THAT movie wouldn't have been marketed as a
horror movie like this was.

Now to the fun part; the flaws of Orang Minyak, and
where do I even begin? Well, let's just go through the
biggest flaws one at a time. First we have the fact
that several scenes are out of focus making the picture
extremely blurry - this to me felt very incompetent.
Then we have the ridiculously bad editing making the
movie look cheap and choppy. The oily man moves like a
robot impersonating Austin Powers (and while this is
hilarious to look at, it's not intentionally funny).
The special effects are so campy that it looks like
they were stolen from some low-budget horror/sci-fi
flick from the early 80s, and I'm not exaggerating.

Orang Minyak is also the first Malaysian movie ever to
be released with DTS sound. However, the movie was not
recorded in DTS, all the dialogues and sound effects
were recorded after the movie was finished. So how is
this a problem? Well several dialogues are out of sync
and the sounds don't feel natural at all. These are
the movie's main problems, but believe you me, it's
just the tip of the iceberg. I've only got two positive
things to say about it and that's;

1. It made me laugh until I cried - unintentionally.
2. The opening title and credits were pretty cool.

Is that enough to make me recommend this movie? Hell
no. I can't even remember the last time I saw a movie
this bad... oh wait, yes I can, it was a stupid comedy
called "The Foursome" where four old men were playing
golf and making golf jokes for an hour and a half.
Anyway, Orang Minyak is an extremely incompetent and
ridiculously bad sci-fi thriller (don't you DARE call
it a horror flick because it's not). Do not waste
your time on this rubbish.

Are you kidding me?

Well we do get some REALLY bad rock music and some
typical Asian sounding music, but that's it. Awful.

Man was this ever a mess. Orang Minyak was just sad.
I've never seen anything quite like it before, I didn't
even know that it was possible to make movies this
incompetent. Seriously, this made Ulli Lommel's movies
look like masterpieces, that's how bad it was. Do not
waste your time people.
