"Abstract and artistic - certainly not a movie for everyone"

Medea Yarn is an independent filmmaker currently
shooting an apocalyptic gay zombie porn movie. When
a young man named Otto shows up, she instantly
decides to cast him as he truly believes the he's
a real zombie, but is he really?

I don't really get why abstract artistic movies like
Shortbus are so loved among movie-goers and critics.
Maybe I'm just too simple-minded to be able to enjoy
these kind of films, but just like Shortbus, Otto is
a movie for... errr... a somewhat different audience.
In other words, it's a movie misfit. Part of me liked
it, part of me didn't, but this is coming from the
guy who thought that Let The Right One In was mediocre
at best. I know that my taste in movies can be a bit
controversial since I don't like my horror served up
with a big slice of drama next to it. I want to be
entertained, not intellectually challenged when I
watch a movie, if that was the case I would read books
instead - and that's just a waste of time.

Ok so on with the review. Otto is definitely an
art house movie that few mainstream cinema goers would
be able to enjoy. It's even got some actual pornographic
content in it - not a lot though but still. The only
reason why I ended up enjoying it more than I probably
should have was due to the cleverly written script
which has a couple of good points and a strong view.
What's funny is that director / writer Bruce La Bruce
is apparently a renowned gay porn director, who
would've thought that such clever minds existed in
the gay porn industry? Anyway, it's obviously aimed
at the gay crowd and I think that gay people will
indeed enjoy it a whole lot more than straight people
for several reasons.

Otto isn't a horror movie though, it's a movie about
outcasts and dealing with being different. It's also
a satirical look at today’s community and there was
one line in the movie that will stick with me for a
long time. Still, when the movie's over, you're not
excited, you're not touched, you're not scared, you're
not really anything, it just is. I don't really know
when a good time would be to watch a movie like
Otto, I think you really have to watch it with the
right crowd to be able to enjoy it but it's certainly
not a movie that I will watch twice. It's got some
good qualities but it's just way too obscure for my
taste. It could've been a whole lot worse though.

Some intestines.

Errr... ehmmm... freestyle jazz music and abstract
sounds? I'm not sure about this.

Abstract and artistic - certainly not a movie for
everyone and not really for me either. It is what
it is and it's pretty damn good for what it is but
the fact is that this is not something that I would
normally enjoy watching. Only recommended to people
who "get" these kind of movies.
