Some
students from Woodson University are participating in
the yearly Island competition. Everyone gets cuffed together
with a random partner and are then sent out to collect men's
and women's underwear in the tropical island woods. Along
the way there are some Piñatas, which include some alcohol
treats for the students. When two of the students find an
old, big, wooden piñata, they assume that it's the grand
prize and decide to break it open with a rock. What they don't
know is that they have just released the evil spirit of the
piñata, and now all of the students on the island are in great
danger, and for every soul that the piñata collects, the
more powerful it gets.
Before watching this I had read a stack full of reviews
downing this film, so ofcourse my expectations were indeed
very low. When I started watching it, I have to say that I
wasn't too impressed as I thought the opening was very cheesy
and the lack of colours used in it were very greyish and not
very comfortable for the eye. But as the opening passed and
the movie started, my opinions about this movie took a quick
turn for the better. The idea is actually very original in
my eyes as I haven’t seen a demon piñata slasher before and
I always think it's nice to have some new ideas to the horror genre.
David and Scott Hillenbrand do a quite good job at directing
this. They previously directed the snake horrormovie King Cobra
together and if you've seen that, you know what you can expect
as the directing is very similar to that movie. I can't say
that I was very impressed by the acting though, it seemed so
obvious, but ofcourse, the actors didn't have a very deep
dialogue to get into.
Piñata is the fastest moving horrormovie I have ever seen,
there is always something going on. Although, I did feel that
they overused the loud noise scare too many times, it was
indeed very effective and I jumped almost every time, but to
me, I kind of think that's a bit cheap. Now, the piñata does
look like something from the first version of Doom, but that
doesn't take away any of the fun watching it, this is probably
the most hysterical killer creature you will ever see on film,
it's unbelievable how hysterical it is. In the end I didn't
know whether I liked this movie or hated it... but I think I
liked it since obviously I ended up giving it four stars.

Well, the bodycount isn't that high, and there are a few off-
screen killings. But when we do get gore, it is graphical as
hell. Someone gets beaten with shovel in the head until the
head literarily cracks open, a man gets cut in half and we
get to see all the guts hanging from his body, we also get a
severed head and plenty of other gory severed bodyparts.

The music in the opening scene is hard to describe, I guess
I would have to call it Indian horror music. Then we get lots
of rock pop tunes, three or four I think, some occasional
piano/strings music and a nice sexy R'n'B track.

Piñata
has gotten a very bad reputation on its neck and I do
understand why, but I still very much liked it. It's not
everyday that you get to see a monster piñata killing of
teens on a paradise island. And if you expected a scary, serious
horrormovie, then please, do read the title and the plot again.
This is now one of my favourite guilty pleasure movies and I
strongly recommend anyone to rent this, as long as you don't
try to take this movie seriously.
