Steve Kady
is a census taker and his next stop is
a small town called Rockwell Falls. Ironically,
he gets a flat tire just when he's about to enter
the town. He catches a ride with a deputy and it
seems as if Rockwell Falls is an idyllic place
to live in. Or at least that's what the inhabitants
want people to think. Because beneath the sweet
surface, there's a horrible secret - and there's
a reason to why the population always remains at 436.

Jeremy Sisto has quickly become one of my favourite
actors since he's almost only been in good horror
movies. And while Population 436 is a quite
decent movie, I couldn't help but feeling that
this was a quite tame copycat of 2001 Maniacs.
The story revolves around a man who investigates
the population of a small town called Rockwell
Falls. For 100 years the population has remained
exactly the same and that's the only mystery in
this movie (and I think that most of us have
figured the conclusion out before the movie's
even started). It's not a very complex story and
the entire thing is very predictable but I did
like the simplicity of it and there wasn't a dull
moment in the entire film which is why I'm not
going to bash this movie.
With beautiful scenery and nice cinematography,
it's hard to keep your eyes off of the screen and
Jeremy Sisto really carries this movie. Plot
holes? Sure, there are plenty to be found but
it seems as if that's what's popular right now
in horror movies so I'm just going to ignore those
(hate me if you will). And the truth be told,
I actually like these mystery thrillers, as I
said before, it's not exactly brilliant but it's
definitely a good way to kill an hour and a half.
Ultimately I think you have to be able to
appreciate a movie like this for what it is and
not put too much thought into the plot. With a
tighter and more clever script this could have
been something great but in the end, it ended up
being a quite forgettable, yet mildly entertaining
mystery thriller. Worth checking out if you're a
fan of the genre but don't expect much horror.

Nothing here.

The violin music is effective enough. Nothing
spectacular but does what it's intended to.

I don't hate it, I don't love it. Population 436
isn't really a horror movie as much as a mystery
thriller and while I really love this subgenre,
I kind of wish that they had gone for something a
little bit more original. It's still quite
entertaining and Jeremy Sisto makes it worth while.
