A couple
of friends decide to kidnap a young girl
in order to get some quick cash. But what do you
do when the person you've kidnapped turns out to
have been dead for a year? Well, as some say,
some get punished for their sins immediately, and
these friends are just about to find out what
that expression really means.

I can't even begin to tell you just how sick I am
of Asian ghost stories so I was very sceptical
towards seeing "Pray" at all. Eventually, since
I had nothing better to watch, I finally gave in,
and I have to tell you, I'm actually kind of glad
that I did. Pray might be "just another Asian
ghost flick" but it's got a pretty original plot
and the ghost girl isn't meant to be very creepy
from what I could understand.
The movie sort of plays like a ghost slasher with
a bunch of no-good teens in an abandoned school,
getting killed off one by one by an unseen villain.
And still, I don't think that this could be
classed as a slasher as the focus really isn't
on the body count. Instead, the focus lies on the
mystery behind the little girl and what really
happened to her.
What makes Pray different from many other Asian
ghost movies is that it doesn't depend on loud
noises or scares that will make you jump out of
your seat. Instead the movie takes a more creepy
approach and falls into the same subcategory as the
chilling movie "Kairo (aka Pulse)", though this
is nowhere near as good. If this had been made
five years ago or so I would probably have been
able to enjoy it a whole lot more though.
Overall I have to say that I enjoyed Pray, it
doesn't take very long before it gets going and
it's got a continuously good pace throughout the
entire movie. Unfortunately I think I will have
forgotten about this movie by the time that I
wake up tomorrow. It's got a relatively original
approach at the ghost genre but it's nowhere
near good enough to actually leave an impression.

No real music in this movie, mainly some bells
and piano clinking to set the atmosphere. Works
relatively well though.

It feels like I shouldn't be reviewing Japanese
ghost movies anymore as I'm simply fed up with
the entire concept. They should try to expand
their horizons a bit and do something new for
a change - like Thailand. This is a decent movie
but it's definitely not a movie that you have
to see, very forgettable.
