A small scientific expedition group consisting of
Dr. Lovecraft, his girlfriend and four students,
head to Turkey to explore a volcano. What they
don't know is that the volcano is inhabited by a
bunch of angry pterodactyls. And as if that
wasn't enough, they also find themselves running
from terrorists who are apparently lurking in
the forest around the volcano.

I've heard a lot of good things about this creature
feature so naturally I decided to check it out.
The movie starts out with a pretty cool opening
sequence in which a pterodactyl splits a guy in
half. Now, we don't really know where all these
pterodactyls came from as it's never explained,
all we get to see is when the pterodactyl eggs
are hatching. Since it is a Sci-Fi original, plot
holes were expected so I didn't let this bug me.
What I also expected was a bunch of really bad
CG-effects, so when the pterodactyls turned out
to look pretty realistic, I was very positively
surprised. Unfortunately, the way that the
pterodactyls attack get very repetitive after a
while and we are forced to focus more on the
cheesy subplots that aren't exactly great. I wish
that they would have just removed the entire
terrorist concept as it feels ludicrous and very
overused in these kind of films, but I guess that
was the only way that they could fit Coolio into
the movie (man is his career going down the drain).
Mark L Lester is a very experienced director and
I could just tell by looking at his biography
that he's used to working with a low budget. This
might be the reason to why this movie looks so
much more professional than the majority of Sci-Fi
originals. The photography is also very nice with
very vibrant colours that are a treat for the eye.
Pterodactyl is a mildly entertaining creature
feature and probably just about as good as a movie
about killer pterodactyls could get. It tends to
get pretty repetitive and the characters are very
stereotypical. I still do recommend this flick for
any fan of creature features though as it's one
of the better ones that I have seen in quite a while.

A guy gets split in half and one gets the arm ripped
off. We also get a decapitation and a gory body
being munched on by pterodactyls. Gorier than one
would expect.

Nothing memorable. Pretty much the same as in
every other Sci-Fi original.

Mildly entertaining creature feature with quite
a lot of gore and some very cool killer pterodactyls.
The subplots are very cheesy and ludicrous however
and the characters are difficult to root for. Do
check this one out if you're a fan of creature
features though as it's one of the best ones to
come out of the Sci-Fi channel in quite a while.
