A Halloween prank goes terribly wrong and Jonathan ends
up killing his sisters boyfriend. Well, it's Halloween
again, and Jonathan and his sister have just moved to
a new town. They figure that going to a Halloween party
in the middle of nowhere is a good way to get to know
new people, but were they ever so wrong. Before they
know it, a masked killer has shown up and started to
kill the partying teens off one by one.

Every Halloween it's the same thing; the DTV companies
stack the shelves with low-budget indie slasher flicks
in hopes of cashing in on the holiday. Pumpkin Karver
is the first of these Halloween-themed horror flicks to
hit the stores this year, and I did not enjoy it.

While Pumpkin Karver looks surprisingly good technical-
wise, the story is unoriginal and ludicrous and the
pacing is just terrible. The movie revolves around
Jonathan and his sister who have recently moved to a
new town for a fresh start. See, some time ago (I think
it was a year ago), Jonathan accidentally ended up
killing his sisters boyfriend (Whoops!) and ever since
he has had terrible visions and nightmares. Well it
doesn't take a genius to figure out that a killer shows
up at their Halloween party, looking like a Jack O' Lantern,
forcing Jonathan to deal with his past.

I didn't really mind that the plot was so unoriginal,
slasher flicks usually are anyway. What bothered me was
the fact that not only was Jonathan a really unrelatable
and instable character, but we also had to watch him
have his silly visions (don't you just hate when people
have strange visions in horror movies?). Due to all
of this, we also ended up being confused as to whether
the killer was supernatural or human (the ending was
supposed to clear things up I think, but to me it just
got even more confusing).

It definitely doesn't take a genius to write the script
to a movie like Pumpkin Karver. In fact, there were
times that I wondered if they had just made some things
up as they went along (but the sad thing is, I think
that the movie ended up being like they had originally
planned). The movie has a terrible pace and doesn't
get even remotely interesting until the final 20 minutes.
It's a good thing that the movie at least looks good
visually as that was one of the sole reasons as to why
I watched it to the very end.

Pumpkin Karver isn't atrocious, but it's still quite
dull and unimaginative. You can tell that there was
a lot of work put into the movie, but unfortunately,
the story just doesn't hold up. If you've got a good
attention-span, you could do a whole lot worse (god
knows how many bad Jack O' movie's I've sat through).
I still don't see that as a reason to check this one
out though, so don't bother.

A guy gets his guts drilled out by, well, a giant drill.
We also get some carved faces and a decapitation.

The band playing at the party was surprisingly decent.
Other than that, the soundtrack was, just like the movie,
relatively mediocre.

Ludicrous slasher flick with some overambitious twists
that don't really make any sense. The movie is poorly
paced and the "entertainment" doesn't begin until an
hour into the movie (which is way too late). I guess,
if you're a big fan of Jack O' movies, this one is
watchable. It doesn't look as low-budget as one would
expect and there is some decent gore in there. But
unless you love killer Jack O's, don't waste your time.
