A group of
medical students accidentally put a guy in
a coma after a night out. They decide to keep it a
secret but Catherine Thomas feels so guilty that she
tries to come up with a drug to make him wake up again.
Unfortunately for her, the drug allows him to take over
other people's bodies whenever he likes - and he's
plotting for revenge.

People hated Shrooms for some reason. I thought that it
was an okay timewaster with some potential but not a
lot more but I did not hate Shrooms as much as everyone
else did. In fact, I was actually really looking forward
to seeing director Paddy Breathnach's new movie Freakdog.
Sorry, I mean Red Mist (what the heck? - that title
makes no sense at all). I'm a huge Arielle Kebbel fan
and even though she's made some bad choices *cough*
The Grudge 2 *cough*, I still think that she's a very
talented scream queen. It saddens me to say that Freakdog
did not live up to my expectations. Heading into this
movie I had no idea what it was actually about, I just
knew that it was from the director of Shrooms and that
Arielle was starring in it. I knew nothing about the
plot or what subgenre it was.
Well, Red Mist is a slasher flick basically. It's about
a guy in a coma who takes revenge on the people who
hurt him by transferring his mind into other peoples'
bodies, forcing them to do things they don't want to
do - such as commit murder. I'm guessing that the
writer had probably just seen the movie "Patrick"
before writing this as it's an obvious rip-off. It also
feels as if we've seen this story in some other horror
flick as well but I can't remember which one. Anyway,
the movie does have some potential and the production
values are nice with a talented cast and a competent
cinematographer. Just like in Shrooms. There's nothing
wrong with the pacing either and I can't really put
my finger on what makes Red Mist so bland.
I will give pin-pointing the flaws a shot though since
I'm so used to analyzing mediocre to crappy movies
these days (is it just me or am I handing out a lot
of two'ers as of lately?). The first thing that comes
to mind is the unoriginal story obviously. A serial
killer taking over people's bodies isn't brand new by
any means and I don't see how this is any different
from other demonic possession slashers such as Long
Time Dead and Ghost Rig. Also, no matter how good the
cast is, the characters are all very annoying and flat.
You could really care less if they die or survive. The
attempted twists don't really come off as twists since
they're so predictable. You basically know how the entire
movie is going to go after the first 10 minutes and
I'm really not a fan of those kind of films.
If you're interested in checking Red Mist out I would
recommend watching the trailer first because the trailer
shows you everything you need to see - and in a much
shorter amount of time. Save yourself a couple of bucks
and watch Patrick again.

Some gory cuts, a knife through the throat and some
gory bodies. Nothing very concrete though.

Bland. I didn't even think there was anything special
about the dance music played in the bar - and how hard
can it be to find some independent music producer to
make a decent dance tune for you?

If you're a fan of body hopping slashers such as Long
Time Dead and Ghost Rig you will probably find Red Mist
somewhat entertaining. I found it to be rather flat
and forgettable. Definitely a movie you will want to
avoid if you hated Shrooms.
