"Definitely a disappointment"

A group of soldiers are sent out in the middle of the
desert to keep watch over a transport road. As the days
go by a sandstorm hits them and brings an Arabic woman
in distress to their shelter. The mysterious woman
doesn't seem to understand English but it doesn't take
long before the soldiers start having strange hallucinations
and visions of dark memories. Who is this mystery woman
and could she have something to do with the current events?

When I found out that Red Sands, a movie that has
appeared from out of nowhere, was made from the same
people who were responsible for the brilliant horror
flick "Dead Birds" I was ecstatic. Sure enough the
movie opened on a high note showing all the promise in
the world but fifteen minutes into it the movie slowed
down until it finally stood completely still. The movie
was then like a dead body twitching every now and then
for the rest of the running time - failing to create
any atmosphere or suspense with uncreative scares and
clichéd twists. What happened? Dead Birds was such an
original little gem and there really is nothing new
about Red Sands at all. It's another mediocre war-oriented
horror flick in the vein of The Bunker and Deathwatch.

The thin story revolves around seven soldiers who are
guarding a small transport road in the middle of the
desert when a mysterious woman shows up. She appears
to be harmless, but she has brought something very dark
with her. The soldiers soon start to turn against
each other and as paranoia sets in, no one goes safe.
Doesn't it sound like a thousand other recent DTV
horror flicks? Sure does to me anyway. What's even worse
is that Red Sands is mind-numbingly boring. There's just
nothing even remotely interesting about it at all.
The characters are all flat, the directing is basic,
the dialogues are cardboard. It's like watching a pilot
episode of a new TV-show and you just know that this
one isn't going to make it to the 2nd episode.

90% of the movie takes place inside an abandoned house
which could explain why the movie looks like it had
a higher production budget than it actually did. What
really reveals the low budget is the hilariously bad
CGI which is sure to make you cringe. Not because it's
creepy or disgusting or anything but because it's what
we could expect from a Sci-Fi channel original 5 years
ago. That's how bad it is. The so-called demons aren't
very scary-looking either and the scares fell short.
It didn't even seem as if they wanted to scare us, I'm
not really sure what the goal of the movie was to be
honest with you. It went on and on and never got anywhere.
This is what I would like to call a complete waste of
time. For those of you expecting a sequel to Dead Birds,
sorry, this is not it.

A hole in the head and a slit throat.

Pretty silent for most of the time.

Definitely a disappointment. This was not what I had
expected at all. More like a lame sequel to "The Bunker"
than a sequel to "Dead Birds". For those of you looking
for a scary horror flick, look elsewhere, this won't
even scare teenaged girls.
