Arthur is a
gravedigger... his wife is a nag and he barely makes
any money at all even though he works hard every day... and so
he steals jewelleries from the people that he's about to bury
since he doesn't feel that they need them anymore, but one day,
the dead will prove him wrong...
Before I begin
to review The Risen, I have to say that I'm
not very fond of black and white movies, it didn't work for
The Addiction and I didn't think it worked very well for this
either. Judging by the cover of this you might expect a slasher,
but this is not a slasher in any way. This is an arty zombie
film. It has an average cheese level indeed, but I actually
jumped high in my seat one time in this movie, also, there
are some very suspenseful scenes, which are very creepy.
I loved the smart comment that went something like 'Shut up,
or I will push you out of the car so that you can play with
the dead girl again'.
The acting is very bad in the beginning, but once the movie
gets going, you seem to be able to forget that as I ended
up rooting for one of the persons. The directing looks very
good for an independent movie, but as I said, it would
probably have been better if it wasn't in black and white.
If the whole movie would've been like the first 20 minutes,
this would have gotten 1 or maybe even 0 stars, but when
the movie gets going, it gets quite interesting. I believe
that this would have been a better movie if it was in colour
and if they changed the premise a bit so that the zombies
would have been ghosts (as it feels in the first scary scene).
You have a good time watching this though so I felt that
it deserved better than 1 star, god knows how many low
budget movies that have bored me to death, and I was just
so grateful for this not being one of them. Oh and by the
way, the man on the cover is holding a shovel, not a scythe
as I thought.

Well, it's
in black and white, so even if it was the goriest
film on earth, you still wouldn't be able to enjoy it as the
blood is as black as the night. Fortunately, this isn't very
gory at all, we only get a severed hand.

Nothing
very special here, some independent rock music is
playing in the background in one scene though.

While not
being totally unsatisfying, this still has many
things that it could have done better, and please, give us
some colour. For all zombie fans out there, this might be
a pleasant surprise, but I've never been very big on Zombie
movies, so I'm sure some of you will enjoy this a lot more
than I did, especially if you liked Romero's Of The Dead films.
