Several years
ago, Laura gave away her baby for adoption.
Big mistake. Now, her son has accidentally killed
himself and his spirit is set on killing anyone who
caused him harm when he was alive - including Laura.
His spirit travels from body to body and soon enough,
there's no one left for Laura to trust. Will she be
able to come out of this nightmare alive?

There's no rising of the dead in this movie so why
they decided to release it with such a generic title,
making it sound like a cheap zombie flick, is just
beyond me. Now, we've established that it isn't a
zombie flick, so what exactly is Rise of The Dead?
Well, I don't really know what to call it to be honest
with you, but for those of you who have seen the
pathetic Italian horror movie "Ghost Son", be prepared
for a flashback. To simplify the story, it's basically
a horror flick about a virus that causes people to
go insane and kill people - not about zombies rising
from the dead - even though the first infected people
did look rather zombie-like. Anyhoo, let's get on with
the plot description shall we?
Laura hasn't seen her baby son since she gave him away
for adoption some years ago, nor will she ever again
since he recently died in a tragic accident in his
foster home (at the age of three or something). Soon
enough, people around Laura start acting all crazy
and try to kill Laura for no apparent reason. She finds
out that her son has been cursed by his original
adoptive parents and wants everyone who caused him
harm to die. Now it doesn't really seem plausible that
a three year old baby could have these strong emotions,
nor that his spirit would possess random people so that
they could kill people for him. To make a long story
short, nothing about this movie feels plausible. It's
a rather ludicrous story to be honest with you but I'm
just thankful that I didn't have to sit through yet
another low-budget zombie flick. At least this one had
an ounce of originality in it.
Looking through my review archive, there are several
films in there that I don't even remember having seen
and I'm pretty sure that this will also be the case
with Rise Of The Dead. It's not a memorable film in
any way, which is really a shame because it seems as
if a lot of effort went into making this movie. Hell,
even the actors seem somewhat connected with their
flat characters. The main problem isn't the fact that
the story is completely ludicrous, it's the pacing
and the repetitiveness of the movie. The movie simply
lacks that energy to keep the viewer interested. It's
well directed and all but there's nothing special about
it. We all know when and where people are going to turn
into raving maniacs and try to kill Laura but we don't
care. Luckily, the movie is only 70 minutes long and
that's another redeeming factor.
In the end, Rise Of The Dead isn't a horrible movie,
it's just not a very memorable one. It kept me watching
until the end but just barely. I did appreciate the
time and effort that went into making the movie, and
I also did appreciate the fact that they at least tried
to make something new and inventive - it's unfortunate
that it didn't work. I'm sure that the next movie we
see from these guys will be a whole lot better, but
don't bother checking out Rise Of The Dead - especially
not if you're looking for a zombie movie.

Not much to say here.

There was a soundtrack? I didn't notice.

There's not a whole lot to say about Rise Of The Dead,
it's as forgettable as they come but it's not as
atrocious as many DTV horror flicks that Lions Gate
are spewing out these days. Definitely nothing you
should check out but if you're forced to watch it,
it's not impossible to sit through it. Beware though,
it's not a zombie movie.
