Jason and three
of his friends go to Eastern Europe to
check out a house that he recently inherited. On the way
to the village they find an old sword embedded in a
rock, he manages to pull it out, unknowing of the terror
that he's just unleashed upon the village. Soon enough
they find themselves fighting for their lives as a
giant rock monster tries to destroy everything that
comes in its way.

Sci-Fi channel originals generally suck and the plot
for this movie didn't exactly make it seem like a
winner. However, I was somewhat interested in checking
it out since the production company, RM Productions,
haven't produced anything for the Sci-Fi channel before
(as far as I know). In case you didn't know, the
Sci-Fi channel buys most of their movies from crappy
companies like Cinetel films and RHI Entertainment.
Anyway, to my surprise, I actually found Rock Monster
to be quite satisfying. Not because of the monster
because the concept really does suck (sorry, but it
really does) but because of everything else around it.
The movie is basically about four American students
who go to Bulgaria (I think) and accidentally unleash
an evil rock monster. There are many flaws to be found
in here and I figured I might as well start with the
negatives this time. For those of you who are unaware
of how Bulgaria is in reality I can tell you this;
their English is terrible, most of them don't even
speak English (heck, just look up "Ken Lee" on YouTube
and you'll find a hilarious idol audition from Bulgaria
where a girl is trying to sing Mariah Carey's Without
You). It's a really poor country and the education
level is low. This is where the movie makes its first
mistake; all of the villagers (and this is a really
small village in the middle of the woods to make it
even less plausible) speak perfect English. They even
know phrases like "sticks and stones". Hell, they
even speak English with each other for most of the time.
Furthermore, this movie portrays Bulgarians as tourist
hostile people which they're not. They might not be
tourist friendly for the right reasons (it doesn't
matter what hotel you're staying at in Bulgaria,
most likely someone from the staff WILL steal money
from your hotel room) but they are tourist friendly.
Anyway, enough about Bulgaria - the plot itself isn't
very likely either. I doubt that this Jason fellow
would travel all the way to Eastern Europe just to
check out some old cabin that he's inherited. It's
probably worth less than what he paid for the trip.
The CGI isn't great either, it's actually pretty bad
and I wasn't a big fan of the rock monster - but you
all ready knew this.
Now it's time for the positives. The movie is extremely
entertaining, it introduces some interesting and
likeable characters (I loved Toni, she was terrific).
There are a couple of good jokes and the entire film
just puts you in a good mood. Sure, it's predictable
and all but these guys knew that they weren't making
anything original, they were simply trying to give
their audience a good time. Rock Monster really is
all about the mindless fun. It's got OKAY production
values, it's got a good cast and the pace is solid
throughout the entire movie. If the Sci-Fi channel
premiered more movies like this I would actually be
looking forward to see what more they had to offer.
Together with Living Hell, this is one of the better
Sci-Fi originals that I've seen. It may not be anything
fresh and exciting but it's mindless fun and it keeps
you entertained through and through. Believe it or not
but I'm actually going to recommend this film. It's
surprisingly entertaining.

Nothing worth mentioning.

Sci-Fi channel stuff.

One of the better Sci-Fi originals that I've seen. Rock
Monster is mindless fun and is sure to keep you
entertained through and through. It's nothing fresh
but the guys behind this movie knew what they were
making and made the most out of it. I'm actually kind
of excited to see more stuff from RM Productions in
the future. Maybe they'll even make something
plausible and believable next time.
