When Joan was
only a teenager, she was kidnapped by a
demented serial killer who forced her to tell him to
kill her best friend. Now, she's all grown up and she's
returned to her hometown in time for her niece's
graduation, only to realize that the serial killer is
back - and her niece may be the next victim.

Scar is proof that the torture-porn trend is worn out.
How so? Well the killer uses the same method of killing
as the killer in Waz. To avoid comparing the two movies
(which were made at about the same time), I'll just
say that both movies have strengths and weaknesses and
they're quite equal, even if I liked Scar just a tad
bit more. The one main difference between the two movies
is that Scar is shot in 3D. Not in an annoying way
though. It cleverly uses the 3D effect in a subtle
manor so that it doesn't overshadow the storyline. In
fact, there are no real in-your-face effects, the 3D
is just there to add to the atmosphere of the movie.
The story isn't anything special. It's about a serial
killer who kidnaps two victims at a time and takes
turns to torture them until one of them tells him to
kill the other person. It's quite an evil way to off
somebody don't you think? And the torture scenes are
quite brutal and bloody. Anyhoo, what makes Scar
different from other torture-porn flicks, make no
mistake, this is indeed a torture-porn flick, is that
it doesn't focus on the torture scenes as much as it
focuses on the story-line itself. I'd also like to add
that while Scar is listed as a crime-thriller on IMDb,
it's more of a slasher than anything. Yay.
It's always nice to see Angela Bettis and here she
is giving us her strongest performance since May.
Even if Angela may not have the biggest part in the
movie, she still steals the show and shows us that
she is the one to focus on. The rest of the cast gives
us stellar performances as well though. Now to the
technical part of the movie. I'm sorry to say that
even with the beautiful cinematography and subtle use
of 3D, it still looked and felt like a DTV movie to
me. I can't quite put my finger on it but there was
something about it that felt rather cheap (even though
I'm sure that it wasn't). Perhaps it's the fact that
it's been so long since we saw a proper, R-rated slasher
flick in cinemas that we're used to having to grab them
on DVD when they occasionally show up.
While not the most original or creative horror flick
out there, Scar is certainly an entertaining movie and
contains buckets of gore to please all gore hounds
out there. It's not very mainstream and certainly not
a movie that you watch together with your girlfriend
but if you're by yourself, you have a big bag of
popcorn just waiting to get eaten, waste some time
with this gory torture flick. It's surprisingly good.

We get a tongue cut out, a slit throat, a knife jammed
in the throat, a thumb cut off, and a whole lot more.

Nothing that stood out to me. Did a decent job but
I was never really scared and I think that a stronger
soundtrack could've helped.

Scar is gruesome and gory and will satisfy most horror
fans. It's a terrific horror flick in many ways but
we've seen it before and it doesn't feel very
interesting anymore - and it doesn't help much that
they've shot the movie in 3D. Anyway, worth checking
out as it's surprisingly entertaining.
