A bunch of cheerleaders are participating in a scavenger
hunt hosted by a local radio station. The clues are very
hard to get and everyone split up to find the things
on their own. What they don't know is that a guy in a
mascot bear outfit is killing off all the girls. Who could
it be and why is this someone killing of the girls?

The ScareMaker is a film that I've been wanting to see
for several years now and when it was finally released on
DVD, I immediately ordered it. To my disappointment, this
wasn't all that good, in fact, it was pretty bad. The
story basically involves a bunch of cheerleaders getting
killed every now and then. We never really get to know
any of the characters and the movie's pretty much all
about couples breaking up and a killer offing girls one
by one in a bear costume. I guess I should have went in
expecting less from this one.

Just like with many other 80s slasher flicks, nothing
really happens during the first hour or so and normally
it's so that we get to know the characters but I didn't
really see the point here since there are no characters
to care about. The acting is pretty descent I guess but
how hard can it be to either play drunk or play dead?
That's really all that these actors have to do, except
for Hal Holbrook who plays the sheriff in this movie,
all he does is sit and speak on the telephone. As one
of the guys on IMDB said, it seems as if they shot every
scene with Hal Holbrook in one day.

Robert Deubel is responsible for the directing in this
flick and not too surprisingly, this was the last film
he directed. I guess he must've realized that this wasn't
the right occupation for him. Any dimwit could have
directed this movie really. I mean, it looks like it had
a relatively decent budget but there is nothing special
about the directing at all.

The ScareMaker, also known as Girls Nite Out, was, for me,
a huge disappointment as I had expected so much more. The
bear costume is pretty cool and probably the best thing
about this movie. If you head in with low expectations you
might be able to enjoy this but for me, this was just
another forgettable 80s slasher flick with nothing special
to offer.

A lot of fake blood but no real gore to speak about.

At first I thought the soundtrack was pretty good, with
classics like Summer in the city, Yummy yummy yummy and
Hanky panky (man, they were great at making up lyrics
back in the days weren't they?) but when all tracks are
played two times in the movie, it gets kind of repetitive.

A huge disappointment for me, I had expected so much more
from this slasher flick - don't ask me why because I have
no idea. There are no characters to care about and the
story is anything but interesting. This might be an
all right slasher flick if you don't expect anything from
it, but in the end, this was just another cheesy 80s
slasher flick.
