A group of
employees from a military defence contractor
get rewarded with a team-building weekend in Hungary.
To their disappointment, it appears that the luxury
cottage that they were promised is nothing else but an
old dump - and that's being nice. What's even worse is
that the woods is filled with war-crazed killers who
have a taste for blood.

Christopher Smith returns for a second stab at the
horror genre after his mediocre slasher flick Creep,
and this time he scores - big time. Severance is one
of the utter most brilliant horror comedies that I've
seen in a long time. Following in the footsteps of
Shaun Of The Dead, it puts the everyday person in an
extreme situation, and of course gives it a comic spin.
On one level, Severance is actually even superior to
the great zombie comedy as it not only works brilliantly
as a comedy, but works just as well as a horror flick.
Filled with suspenseful and intense scenes, this movie
will have you laughing and screaming every other minute.
The movie opens up with two big-breasted girls and a
chubby man getting chased by a serial killer. The two
girls fall into a whole while the man gets killed. None
of it really made any sense, but naturally it all ties
together as the movie progresses. A couple of employees
from a military defence contractor are on their way
to a luxurious lodge in the Hungarian woods for a
team-building weekend. When they finally arrive,
they're more than disappointed to see that their
luxurious lodge is nothing more but an old dump, which
apparently used to be an asylum. Things go from bad
to worse when a bunch of war-crazed killers, who
presumably used to be locked up inside the asylum,
start killing them off one by one.
As you can probably tell, the plot is quite original,
which is something rare in horror movies these days.
The movie plays with all the horror movie clichés in
a clever and funny way while still being respectful
(unlike immature spoofs like Scary Movie). But just
like with Shaun Of The Dead, it's the great pace and
the relatable characters that really makes the movie
work. The acting is top-notch throughout and it's easy
to tell that they all went in full-heartedly. The
biggest surprise of all was unknown actress Claudie
Blakley though, who gave us the best performance of
them all.
It's hard to believe that this was made by the same
guy who brought us Creep as the two movies have nothing
in common. Most of us have sat through countless of
poor horror comedies and know how easy it is to fail
at this mixture but Christopher has really managed to
pull this one off. As usual, I'm having a really hard
time reviewing a movie that I love so I hope I've
convinced you to check this one out by now. It's an
absolutely brilliant blend of comedy and horror so
don't miss this one - it is a BLAST!.

To be honest with you, I was too occupied enjoying the
movie to really remember all the gory details, but
we do get a leg cut off and a nasty decapitation.

Magnificent score which, especially towards the ending,
added a whole lot to the movie.

I loved it, I loved it, I loved it! Severance is one
of the best horror comedies that I have ever seen and
I strongly urge you to check this one out. Christopher
is genius and I can't wait to see what he'll come
up with next. If you're a horror fan, there's just no
way that you can afford missing this one.
