A young couple
are celebrating their anniversary and
are on their way to a motel when they're forced to
pick up two criminals along the way. It seems as if
things couldn't get any worse but when they stop at
a small gas station, the real terror begins. Watch
out for splinters.

This Halloween is crowded with horror films and you
have to choose wisely which to check out in cinemas.
Well, Splinter is definitely one to book tickets
for as it's the perfect Halloween flick. While not
the most original horror flick out there (it seemed
to have an awful lot in common with Reeker), Splinter
delivers everything one could ask for from a horror
flick; suspense, thrills, scares, gore and more (no,
I don't consider nudity to be a necessity in a horror
flick). In Splinter we're introduced to four main
characters who get stuck in a gas station with some
kind of parasite taking over people's bodies and
turning them into very dangerous zombies more or
less (well, they are dead but due to the parasite,
they're still up and moving).
The parasite in question has the shape of very sharp
thorns and if it touches you it will slowly consume
your body and kill you from within. This is a pretty
neat concept if you ask me and the parasite really
is scary in the way that it breaks all bones and
limbs inside its host's body. Yes, indeed very
disgusting but in a great way. There were even
moments were I found myself saying "oh my god" due
to the graphic content of the movie, and the sound
effects were just the frosting on top of it all.
Splinter takes its time developing the characters
so that we really get to know them and these are
really very interesting characters. It also helps
that the acting is all-around terrific. Director
Toby Wilkins is terrific behind the camera and gives
us some great shots and angles which makes me
somewhat excited about The Grudge 3 since he directed
that as well. You know, it's always nice when we
get these small indie horror flicks that turn out
to be golden nuggets even if the special effects
were a bit mediocre due to its limited budget.
Still it's very nice to see that it's getting a
theatrical release - even if just a very limited one.
If you're looking for a terrific horror flick that
will make you cringe and squirm, look no further,
Splinter is the movie for you. An outstanding
horror movie just in time for Halloween, I really
hope that we'll get a sequel to this as it's one
of the better horror movies of the year. Make
sure to check this one out in the cinema as it's
certainly not often that we get to see this kind
of horror movies on the big screen.

We get gory bodies, broken limbs, severed hands,
a person gets split in half, an arm cut off and a
whole lot more. Great stuff.

Competent rock music accompanied with a stellar
suspense score and good sound effects.

A top-notch horror flick which will make you cringe
in your seat as a deadly parasite turns people into
walking cadavers. Splinter has everything you could
ask for from a horror flick and it's certainly one
of the better horror flicks this year so be sure
to check this one out on the big screen. You won't
be sorry, especially not if you liked Reeker.
