A small town has got a big problem as an abnormally
big octopus has found its way to their bay and has
started to feed on the locals. With a big sailing
competition coming up, preventing people from going
to the water would cause chaos so they decide to
leave it as it is for now. What they don't know is
that the giant octopus is still hungry and it seems
as if there's no stop to its eating.

It seems as if Japan is getting all the good DVD
releases lately. Tentacles is just one of the many
cult flicks that have been released uncut and in
excellent anamorphic widescreen in Japan this year.
Tentacles is yet another Jaws rip-off from the great
70s. This one is actually very infamous for being
one of the worst ones but I thought that it was
pretty good, especially compared to other giant
octopus movies that I've seen, like The Beast,
Octopus and Octopus 2. There's one thing that made
me like this especially much and that was the fact
that the bad guys weren't so bad and the sheriff
was actually quite co-operative.
Almost all of the characters were very likeable
actually but one thing I found strange was the fact
that the people that many people that seemed to
have an important role in the movie got killed off
pretty quickly and in pretty short scenes. However,
the directing is simply brilliant. The camerawork
is stunning, especially for the time. There are
quite a few very long scenes with no cutting at
all and that's just magnificent.
We rarely get to see the actual octopus but when
we do see it, it looks pretty real, not like those
cheap CGI effects used these days. Due to the fact
that they didn't have CGI back in the 70s and the
fact that there is no such thing as a huge octopus
like the one in the movie they've done some clever
tricks. The octopus always looks real and it's never
shown very well which surprisingly enough didn't
bother me that much. So to summarize it, the movie
was probably the best octopus horror flick I've
seen, excellent directing, interesting characters
and a totally acceptable killer octopus.

To my great disappointment this could've been rated
PG (and it probably is) since there's actually no
gore at all in it.

At first I thought that the soundtrack was really
bad but with time I learnt to really appreciate the
classic Italian horror score. It worked especially
well in the sailing boat race scene.

With few flaws I think that this movie has gotten
a bad reputation which it does not deserve. It's
not a brilliant flick but it sure as hell is a lot
better than some other creature feature flicks I've
seen. If you wanna check a killer octopus movie out,
I suggest that this is the one. Though, be sure to
order it from Japan as their DVD release is killer!
