Sarah and her mum take a trip to a remote cottage
on the Welsh coast where Sarah's dad is staying
and at first it all seems to good to be true but
soon the history of this place catches up with
them. Sarah vanishes into the deep water, leaving
her mother in misery and soon, a new young girl
shows up, Ebrill, who claims that she died many
years ago in a mass suicide. What has really
happened to Sarah, and what does Ebrill want?

I'm not entire sure about what I think about this
movie. The Dark has got a great, creepy atmosphere,
beautiful sceneries and some really scary moments
but there's something missing. The first 30 minutes
go by way too slowly and will probably make many
people turn this off. After that however, The Dark
turns into a The Ring wannabe with a couple of
fresh and clever twists and a pretty smart plot.
Still, despite a very confusing but still very
entertaining ending, I found myself in a difficult
situation, I didn't really like it, nor did I
dislike it, so where does that leave me?
The movie plays a lot on scary sheep (well I guess
that The Ring had horses so a British horror
flick naturally needs to have sheep) and no
matter how stupid this idea may have been, there
is an ultimately cool scene where a bunch of
sheep commit suicide that added to the atmosphere
of the movie in its entirety. Something else
that I disliked was the fact that the ending left
too many questions unanswered but I guess that's
just how horror movies are supposed to be these
days to be able to attract the teenyboppers.
John Fawcett, who swayed all horror fans with
the hit werewolf movie Ginger Snaps, proves to
us once again that he's a great director. The
scares were however a bit too obvious for my
taste, you could tell when a boo scare was coming
from miles away and over all, I didn't think that
this was nearly as slickly directed as Ginger
Snaps was so a bit of a disappointment there.
In its entirety I suppose that The Dark is worth
a watch but I'm not really sure why this is
going theatrical as this is typical DTV material
if you ask me. It's got a relatively original
story and if you get past the first 30 minutes,
I think you'll be hooked for the rest of the
movie as well. Do rent this one on DVD though.

Not very gory, we get a dry impalement and very
little more than that.

Loud noises and powerful violins are always
effective in horror flicks such as this one
so the score definitely gets an A+ from me.

The Dark is relatively original even though it
was obviously inspired by The Ring. This is one
movie that you will want to see on DVD, not in
a theatre because the first 30 minutes might just
put you right to sleep and even if they don't,
I'm not sure that everyone's scared of demonic
sheep or blonde girls.
