Nell and her husband move into an old building. Their
neighbours are a bit loud and strange but Nell soon
finds a friend and feels that she might just be able
to live in the terrible old loud building after all.
But when her new found friend disappears without a
trace, Nell decides to do some investigation of her
own. What she doesn't know is that someone is after
her... and everyone else aswell.

Some say it's a remake, some say it isn't. Well it
sure didn't feel like one even if both this and
the 70's version have similar plots. The only thing
that's really the same is that there's a masked
killer killing people with various tools. This one
was a lot scarier aswell in my opinion. You see,
you always expected the killer to jump out from
somewhere and you were sitting like "Oh, just jump
out already, we know you're there" and then all
of a sudden he comes out from somewhere else,
scaring the crap out of you. I think I jumped
every single time that he came out actually. The
movie is also very intense and suspenseful,
especially the chase scene with Nell in the
stairway. That will have you biting of your fingers.
Angela Bettis finally got a part in a horrormovie
where she didn't have to play a psychopath. Good
for her. At first it was hard getting used to
taking her as a serious person since you're so
used to seeing her as a mad lunatic. But she's
a very talented actress so it didn't take long
before you had forgotten all about her earlier
movies. Tobe Hooper is also a great director but
I felt that the budget was against him this time.
He manages to build up the tension brilliantly
but it's hard to really like the movie when you're
constantly thinking that this should've had
better production values.
If this was made for cinema, I think that I would
have given it a four rating. But this looked more
like a cheap TV-movie than anything else which
kind of ruined the entire mood of the film. It's
a good movie and very dramatic aswell with
riddles and mysteries to solve. You're always
interested in the movie. But I felt that it
lacked of something, something that I really
needed to be able to truly enjoy the film. Also,
I was a bit annoyed with the fact that no one
seemed to notice that everyone around them was
disappearing. At least the doorman should've
noticed that I think.

Too bad the gore was always filmed in the dark
so that it was hard to see what was going on.
But what I saw was a guy getting his face melted
with acid (tool?), one guy gets his head split
into two parts, one gets a drill through the neck,
one gets a nail shot in the throat and then we
have some more bloodsplatter and corpses.

The soundtrack was quite absent from this movie,
all you could hear was some silent background music
and a loud bass. Still, it was pretty good.

Remake or not, this was a pretty good movie. With
higher production values this could've been a
really good film. Unfortunately, lots of scares
and lots of suspense doesn't always make a good
movie. Could have, should have and would have a
better movie if they had made more effort in
making it I think.
