Three years ago, the world ran out of gas. Now, most of
human kind has died from starvation or war and a group
of survivors have found a new home in an abandoned
hospital where they've been safe for over a year. Well,
no longer. A group of hungry cannibals who call
themselves rovers have tracked them down and are dying
for a good meal.

Tooth and Nail is the final movie from last years After
Dark Horror Fest to be reviewed and it's a notch better
than most of them (even though it doesn't beat Borderland)
but I'm going to go straight ahead and tell you my
main issues with this movie. First of all, the story
is rather moronic and Mark Young (who's both written
and directed this flick) must've had way too much
spare time to think about how the world will end.
Unfortunately it seems as if he started shooting this
film before he realized the major flaws in his theory.
Almost all of mankind has died out since we ran out of
gas because apparently we need gas to generate
electricity. Well let me be the first to say MY ASS!
First of all I didn't know gas generated electricity
and even if it did, haven't you ever heard about
solar power? Or windmills? Or water power? I'm sorry
but that's just moronic and uneducated if you ask me.

Furthermore, even if gas was in fact the only thing that
could generate electricity - how the hell did we manage
to stay alive in the 19th, 18th, 17th, 16th century and
so on? We also get the explanation that we couldn't use
coal because the trucks couldn't drive it - well, again,
my ass. I think that if they really were that desperate
to drive coal and had NO money to build battery-driven
trucks, there are thousands of battery-driven busses
out there that they could've easily used in case of an
emergency. There are just so many holes in this theory
that it amazes me that this guy even knew how to hold
a camera. Okay so we've established that Mr. Young isn't
the most clever guy out there but in one way or the
other, this guy has actually managed to make a pretty
entertaining post-apocalyptic horror flick.

The story revolves around a group of survivors who
have found shelter in an abandoned hospital. They want
to try to start a new world but that's easier said
than done when a group of man-eating cannibals show up
and start feeding on them. Blood sprays everywhere as
the survivors try to stay alive. Nothing really new
here but I was happy to see a post-apocalyptic horror
flick that didn't involve zombies and it got a point
from me right there. Mark's directing abilities are
also surprisingly good and the movie does look rather
well-made with a stellar cast and some interesting
characters that are easy to root for.

Tooth and Nail may not be a masterpiece of any kind but
at least it's better than most of last years Horrorfest
films. It's got some okay twists and it kept me
entertained. As long as you don't think too much about
the plot holes you may be able to enjoy this to some
extent even if it's utterly forgettable. In the end,
it's a decent horror flick but certainly not something
I regret missing out on in the cinemas. As a DTV flick,
it's good, as a theatrical film, not really.

We get a slashed throat, a meat cleaver in the head,
an impalement, an arrow in the eye and some more.

I liked the score, it was fast-paced and competent.

One of the better titles from last years Horrorfest,
even if that's not saying much. It's got a highly
unlikely and rather ludicrous premise but it's still
pretty entertaining and keeps you watching until the
end. It's worth a DVD-rent and if you're uneducated
about how electricity works, you may find it better
than I did.
