A bunch of
tourists get stranded in a small village in
Brazil after an accident with the bus. At first it
doesn't seem too bad. They've got a beautiful beach,
lots to drink and they're surrounded by gorgeous women.
But this idyllic village holds a dark secret which
they are soon about to discover. Waking up drugged and
robbed, the tourists have to flee up in the mountains
together with a friend that they ran into the night
before to seek shelter. But what awaits them, is
something much worse than they could ever imagine.

The trailer looked mediocre, the posters were bland
and the overall marketing really didn't get me excited
about this movie. The result? Pretty much what I had
expected. Turistas is NOT, I repeat, it's NOT a Hostel
rip-off. In fact, there's very little torture to be
found in here. It's more of a holiday-gone-wrong
thriller that occasionally brings you to think that
things are going to get better, only to drag out the
suspenseful scenes to the point where they are no
longer suspenseful - nor intriguing.
The plot is simple, and granted, it does feel like it
was somewhat inspired by Hostel - though this is not
nearly as good (but that's just my opinion). It
revolves around a bunch - and yes they really are a
bunch, eight of them to be exact, party-crazed tourists
(not the fun kind, but the kind that you look at and
feel ashamed for since they can't adapt to the culture
of the country that they're in - well this goes for
most of them anyway) who run into trouble after getting
drugged and robbed (again, stupid tourists, everyone
knows you have to be extra cautious about this when
you're on vacation).
They seek shelter in a cabin in the mountains, thinking
it will be safe for them there. But it's naturally
anything but. They don't arrive at the cabin until
after 40 minutes or so into the movie and there really
isn't too much action going on in the cabin either.
There is one pretty gruesome scene involving torture,
but that's pretty much it. For the rest of the movie
we basically get to watch as the teens get stuck
inside an underwater cave system with a bunch of
killers after them. This was very exciting at first
but after ten minutes or so you couldn't help but to
get a bit bored.
Turistas isn't a bad movie though, and it does pass by
rather quickly. I also thought that it was fun that
the Swedish tourists in the movie actually were Swedish
(they spoke fluent Swedish and their English accent
was pretty much how all Swedes sound like when they
speak English - including me). Ultimately, it's not an
impressive movie. It has some potential but focuses on
all the wrong things. Watchable? Definitely. Hell,
I might even buy it on DVD when it comes out actually.
But that's pretty much what I'm going to suggest for
you too, wait for the DVD - this is not a movie that
you will want to see in the cinema.

It did try, but since it only went in half-assed, it
didn't really matter that much. We get a stick through
the eye, the insides of a body get taken out, toes get
cut off, and some more. It tried, but it didn't really
seem to fit with the movie as a whole.

The Brazilian music was... well... I refuse to believe
that this is the best that they can do. Brazil is the
country of rhythm and this is the best that they could
come up with? Not loving it. The suspense score was
average at best. Didn't do a whole lot.

Forgettable but mildly entertaining and watchable
horror thriller. It won't scare anyone off from going
on vacation, but it might encourage you to fly
instead of taking the bus (maybe this was funded by
American Airlines). Either way, wait for the DVD with
this one, it's not a movie to be enjoyed in the cinema.
