Nualjan has been looking for her husband for almost a
year now as he disappeared without a trace when she
became pregnant. On her journey, she stumbles onto a
big mansion where she's invited to stay. She quickly
becomes friends with another girl who's living there,
Choy. But there's something odd going on at the
mansion, the Madame living in the main house seems a
bit peculiar, and the fact that Choy keeps telling
her horrible ghost stories doesn't help either.

The tagline on my DVD cover says "One of Thailand's
best horror movies since Shutter", which immediately
caused an warning flag to pop up in my head. Why?
Because Thailand hasn't produced many good horror
flicks since Shutter so that tagline really isn't
saying a whole lot. In one way I was right, this
indeed didn't turn out to be a great horror movie,
but in another way I was wrong as it was a pretty
interesting drama thriller.

The Unseeable revolves around Nualjan, a woman from
the country who is searching for her husband. She
is welcomed to stay at a big mansion and quickly
befriends another girl living there named Choy. But
naturally it doesn't take long before strange things
start to happen in the mansion, and there's something
off about the woman living in the main house. Yes,
they have indeed tried very hard to make this a scary
horror movie. We've got lots of semi-suspenseful
scenes overpowered by creepy music, we've got ghosts
popping up every here and there, and we've got a
mystery just aching to be solved.

So why doesn't The Unseeable feel like a horror flick?
To be honest with you, I don't know, but I'll try to
crack this nut as good as I can. As I said before,
there's a whole lot of mildly suspenseful moments to
be found in here but, surprisingly enough, not a single
scare. Then we have the fact that the horror part of
the movie doesn't kick in until about an hour into it,
but the one thing that made this feel like a drama-
thriller was probably how dramatic and ridiculously
complex the story-line was. A ghost movie shouldn't
have a complex story, it should deliver scares, and
lots of them - at least that's my opinion.

However, I quickly overcame the fact that this wasn't
going to be a scary movie and started to enjoy the
complex storyline more and more as the movie progressed.
Nualjan is a very likeable character and even though
she's occasionally quite stupid, you can't help but
to stay interested in her quest for answers. The sad
thing is that the ending is a complete and utter mess
filled with ludicrous twists. One thing that I have
to point out though is how brilliant the movie looks.
I mean, the cinematography is just stunning. There is
no doubt about it; this is one of the classiest and
most stylish horror flicks Thailand has ever produced
(but please don't put that on a cover).

In the end, The Unseeable won't scare anyone. It's a
solid but very forgettable drama-thriller without
any real suspense. They've tried really hard to make
it a horror flick but I couldn't help but to wonder
if this script was originally meant to be a drama
about a woman’s quest for answers - in other words,
not to sound demeaning or anything, but this is sort
of a chick horror flick.

No.

Great piano-theme, great suspense-music, awesome
strings, dramatic choir music. Had it actually been
a horror movie, I'm sure it could have been extremely
creepy - but it's not.

A tame horror movie which feels more like a drama
thriller. It's a quite interesting one at that though
and the story is very complex and well-written. The
ending however is not - it's a complete and utter
mess really. Still, if you're in the mood for a
somewhat atmospheric thriller, The Unseeable may be
just what you're looking for.
