Two friends have to fight to survive the terrible curse that
their small town has been put under by the vortex. Everyone
seems to have become obsessed by these whirlpools and Kirie
and Shuichi soon realises that something's wrong. When Shuichi's
father dies, hell breaks lose and a giant vortex consisting of
dark clouds is created over the small town. Now there's nothing
left for the two friends to do than to try to escape.

Are you sick of watching all these slashers and unoriginal horror-
movies? Well, then you're probably going to like this. Uzumaki
is one of the most original horrorfilms in history. It might be
a little hard to swallow this movie the first time you see it as it
is a very special movie. This is nothing that you see everyday.
Uzumaki doesn't build on a steady ground with a cool plot that
makes sense or uses the psychological level, instead, it makes
no sense at all and basically forces you not to use your brain.
About the steady ground... not so much, this whole film is built
upon a very fragile ground and you feel that it will break any
minute, but it doesn't.

It's amazing how well the actors manage to catch the spirit of
the whirlpool. The acting is just amazing, there is not one
single person in this movie that didn't feel believable.
Director, Higuchinsky, has done an amazing job and should feel
very proud of himself. Here and there he even tries to sneak in
some whirlpools that some might not notice, just for the effect
of the film. I'd say that this director was probably very dedicated
to making this film.

You're probably thinking that a movie with a weak plot and a
weird concept couldn't be good right? Well, I can't say I really
liked it that much the first time I saw it, but already after the
second time I had grown to like it very much. This is one of those
movies that stay with you. If you look in my notebook you will
probably find about at least a 50 vortexes that I did without even
thinking about it. You might not like it the first time you watch
it, but it'll grow on your mind and you will want to see it again
and the second time you will probably like it a lot more than the
first time you watched it.

Eh, hmmm, there is gore... but I don't know what I should count
in as gore... Well, the basic gore consists of one who ripped off
the skin on the fingertips, another one loses the eye and one
gets hit badly by a car. Then there's all this vortex "gore", and
I don't know if I should really count that in or not... well,
all I can say is, you won't be totally disappointed in the gore department.

The soundtrack was just as the rest of the movie... very special,
I don't know how to explain it, but, well, you could tell that
it was an Asian movie by the soundtrack that's for sure. I do
love the end credits track though which is a cool pop tune, also
included at the end of the trailer.

Uzumaki might not impress you the first time you watch it, but it'll
grow on your mind and you will want to see it again. This is one of
those movies that you have to have in your DVD collection. No horror
collection is complete without this. I promise you, you will be
stunned by how weird and different this movie is from everything
else you've watched. Even though I love all these new Asian ghost
movies, I really thought it was nice with some variation.
