Many years ago, a young boy called Jeremy Melton was
badly bullied by his classmates. Now, someone is killing
off the girls who went in his class. Could Jeremy
possibly be back? Well, this Valentine, a couple of
girlfriends won't feel very loved.

Valentine was basically the movie to blame (along with
Urban Legends: Final Cut) to the death of the late 90s
slasher wave. The movie only grossed about 20 million
dollars at the box-office and not even teenyboppers
seemed to like this one. I really do wonder why though.
Valentine is a slick and sexy slasher flick with a cool
killer, a hot cast and a very unoriginal plot (which is
usually a good thing when it comes to slasher flicks).
The story revolves around four girls who suspect that
a boy they used to bully in school is back for revenge.
It really is as simple as that. The movie is very
predictable and still very entertaining and I know
it must chock most of you that I like this flick since
almost every other slasher fan hates this. But on the
other hand, let's keep in mind that most slasher fans
also hated brilliant slasher flicks like "Urban Legend"
and "I Know What You Did Last Summer", simply for the
fact that the movies were "too" mainstream. Well,
I am personally not a big fan of mainstream either but
some mainstream horror flicks are actually really good
and Valentine ranks up among those in my book.
The budget was obviously very high - 29 million dollars
more or less actually, and the photography is stunningly
beautiful. It almost looks French since they use such
vibrant and nice colours in the movie. The directing is,
well, it is what it is, mainstream and definitely
nothing special at all. The acting is strong from most
of these actors as well but come on, let's get serious,
who cares about the acting when the girls are hot as
hell? I mean, Denise Richards in a bikini, how can guys
actually hate this flick?
Valentine might be unoriginal, predictable and clichéd,
but it still managed to satisfy me more than enough.
I've seen this movie five times now I think and I will
never understand how this managed to kill the slasher
wave. Maybe people had just gotten sick of them, or
maybe I just have bad taste, I guess that's really up
to you to decide.

We get an axe in ones back, a decapitated head floating
about, a couple of arrows in ones stomach and some more,
could've used some more gore.

The theme melody for Valentine is beautiful and very
80's which I loved. I didn't care too much for the
suspense score though as it feels very cheesy. We also
get some pop, rock and r'n'b music in here which was
probably thrown in there to attract the teen audience.

Very underrated slasher flick, at least according to
me. I think Valentine is one of the better slashers to
come out of Hollywood in the last couple of years and
it's a shame that it didn't do well enough to get a
sequel because this is a movie that definitely could've
used a sequel. If you still haven't seen Valentine,
I highly advice you to, it's far from as bad as some
people want to make it out to be.
