After a
reunion, a couple of friends find themselves
under the curse of a thumb-less ghost. Could this have
some connection with the game "Oyayubi Sagashi" that
they played when they were kids? One by one, the
friends turn up dead with their thumbs missing. It's
now up to the remaining friends to find out how to
stop this curse once and for all.

Everyone's emailing me, telling me how sick they are
of Japanese horror flicks. But few of them actually
realize that Japan has been producing very few horror
flicks over the past couple of years, South Korea and
Thailand is responsible for most of the recent generic
Asian horror movies so I was actually somewhat excited
about this movie. I should have known better. Vanished,
or Oyayubi Sagashi as it's called in its home country,
is another generic ghost movie where a couple of
friends have to figure out how to get rid of a curse
that has been put upon them.
A bunch of kids play a game of Oyayubi Sagashi, but
something goes wrong and one of the kids end up
missing. They assume that she's just ran away from
home and try to forget all about it. Several years
later, the friends meet again and none of them have
been able to forget about the missing girl so they
decide to play the game again. Bad idea. One by one
the friends start turning up dead with their thumbs
missing. Why? Because apparently the ghost is missing
a thumb. There's no creepy ghost girl in here though,
even if it's suggested that the ghost is a girl. All
we see is a white, blurry hand grab the victims on
the shoulder and then it cuts to a different frame.
Yes, Vanished is indeed a movie intended for the teen
crowd as it's too nice to be a horror movie. There
are no scares to be found, the death scenes are off
screen and the premise is just plain dull. In fact,
I found Vanished to be more of a drama than a horror
flick - and not a very good one at that. The characters
are all extremely flat, the story is too thin to stay
interesting and the twist didn't feel very twisty.
On a positive note, the movie is nicely shot but that's
about the only positive thing I have to say about it.
Ultimately, Vanished isn't an awful horror movie, it
just wasn't very entertaining. I was very tempted
with pushing the stop button several times but you
know me, I watch all kinds of crap just to be able
to warn you guys about what to avoid. And this is
one of those movies.

No.

Nothing special.

Slow-paced and generic ghost movie with way too few
horror elements in it. Felt more like a drama with
a ghost hand in it. Don't waste your time with this
one, it's simply not good enough.
