After a tragic car accident, an evil spirit is accidentally
released and takes over a man's body. A couple of friends
soon find themselves hunted by this evil spirit and decide
to seek refuge in one of the friends house, where apparently
the spirit won't be able to do them any harm... will they
be able to get out of there or will the evil villain kill
them before they get a chance?

Dimension Pictures have been known to give their theatrical
horror flicks the cold treatment and Venom was no exception.
With a trailer and a poster popping up just a week before
release, Dimension decided to dump this slasher flick in
only 500 theatres, giving it a limited release even if it
truly did deserve a wide release. The director of I Know
What You Did Last Summer has returned in hope of starting a
new slasher wave and it's really sad that Dimension Pictures
didn't let him do that as I'm sure Venom could've been quite
a hit if it had been treated better.
Venom feels like it could've been made in the early 2000's
as this kind of flicks are no longer popular. However, after
having seen "Cry Wolf", this movie felt like a masterpiece.
Venom has quite an unoriginal story about a swamp man
killing off a bunch of no-name actors, but it sure as hell
is entertaining. Recently we have had to sit through bull
like "White Noise" and "The Boogeyman" who were obviously
meant to scare kids and finally we get a movie which can
actually live up to its genre with lots of gore and quite a
few scares.
The acting is pretty bad however, considering the budget
anyway. It's a bunch of no-name actors who are obviously
hoping to become the next Neve Campbell. It was however nice
to see a hot teen-cast in a horror flick again, I've missed
that. The directing isn't anything special really and many
scenes felt very inspired by "I Know What You Did Last
Summer". The photography is very nice however, with a creepy
scenery (the Louisiana swamps) and lots of fog.
Even though Venom is a very good and entertaining flick,
it still could have been so much more if they had only
removed the voodoo from the movie. Voodoo + Slasher flick
is not a good concept. In the end, I was positively
surprised by this slasher flick but it still didn't
manage to rank up among the slasher flicks from the late 90s.
Still, do go see this flick in a theatre nearby if you
want to bring R-rated slasher flicks back into the game
again, I sure do!

We get slashed throats, a crowbar through the leg, an
arm torn off, and a couple of gory impalements. Gory enough
to satisfy my needs.

Nothing special here. Average suspense score, could've used
a little pop or rock music.

Surprisingly entertaining slasher flick despite the bad
hype that this flick has gotten. If you miss seeing high
budget, R-rated slasher flicks in theatres, I definitely
recommend that you check this one out. It's gory, it's
fun and it has a good-looking cast.
