A small community is overrun by a swarm of
genetically engineered snakes that have a taste
for human flesh. As the population of the
community quickly decreases, the remaining
survivors have to figure out a way to stop the
killer snakes as they are reproducing at an
extreme pace, but will they succeed?

Everything pointed to that this would be a
disastrously bad horror film. I mean, it's a
Sci-Fi channel original about killer snakes
starring Tara Reid. It doesn't really scream
potential does it? Well, the funny thing is,
this is actually a surprisingly entertaining
creature feature and certainly one of the stronger
Sci-Fi channel originals of the year. Tara Reid
isn't as awful as you'd expect her to be, she's
actually pretty good and throws a couple of
punches her own way to show us that she's got
humour (either that or she's too stupid to
realize that the dialogues are meant to make
fun of her). The story is fairly well-written
and it's got a great pace through and through.

There's nothing really groundbreaking about the
story where a swarm of killer snakes invade an
island (at least I think it was an island,
though apparently one without any boats). What
makes Vipers so entertaining is that it gets
going right away and instead of having clever
snakes that no one notices until the final 10
minutes of the film, these snakes go at it in
the middle of the day in crowded areas, causing
mass-panic among the locals. Brilliant. The
evil scientists (aren't they always?) never
become so evil that it annoys you, instead they
actually show a sense of moral and sympathy
which was a nice, refreshing touch.

Obviously Vipers didn't have the best of production
values but I was happy to see that they had put
the money in the right places (I doubt Tara Reid
was an expensive investment). Sure, the movie
looked technically like an episode of Days Of Our
Lives and sure it was occasionally frustrating
that they mainly used natural light sources but
none of that mattered when the CGI was so decent.
There's not just one or two snake attacks in here,
there are snake attacks throughout the entire
film, and they're quite messy and detailed as
well, so even if the CGI wasn't breath-taking,
it was still nice to actually get to see the
killer creatures so many times (whereas several
creature features only show the creature once
or twice these days due to budget reasons).

Anaconda 3 may have been a big disappointment
but Vipers was surprisingly refreshing so check
this one out instead if you're hungry for a
movie where killer snakes attack people. Don't
let Tara Reid scare you off, instead, take it
for what it is and you may end up having a good
time. Definitely worth a rent.

Lots of gory bites and messed-up bodies.

Well there's nothing new here but who cares.

Surprisingly entertaining creature feature with
a fast-pace and some great death scenes. If
you're looking for a good killer snake movie,
Vipers may definitely be worth a rent. Just try
not to take it too seriously.
