A bunch of friends book a cheap trip to a remote,
tropical island where they hope that they will have
the time of their lives. One night they decide to
gather around the campfire and tell each other their
greatest fears, but guess what? That's a very bad
idea as a voodoo cult soon starts killing them off
one by one by using their worst fears against them.

Turistas meets Fear Factor in this ridiculously
clichéd Australian horror movie. Seriously, campfire?
killed by their worst fears? Come on! Sure enough,
the fact that the movie was extremely generic didn't
turn out to be the worst thing though, in fact, I think
the main concept was one of the movie's stronger
sides - which really isn't saying much. I've always
kind of dug the killed by worst fears concept but
we have a bunch of reasons as to why it doesn't work
on any level in here.

First of all, their fears are all dull. I mean, no
one likes spiders, or rats, or sharks or drowning,
but if you're going to make another horror movie about
fears, for crying out loud, at least make the fears
somewhat original. By the way, this is the second
movie this year that I've seen where a girl gets
drowned in a tub filled with sand, but how the hell
are you supposed to relate to that? It's not scary,
it's just very lame.

Another problem here is the fact that Voodoo Lagoon
doesn't seem to know whether it wants to be a slasher
flick or a silly voodoo movie and ends up being, well,
a silly voodoo slasher movie - perhaps not the best
of combinations. To make matters even worse, the killer
(or killers) is like the worst villain since Quiltface,
and when the teens start hearing his voice echoing in
their heads, you can't help but to laugh of the
cheesiness. Paranoia naturally starts spreading among
the teens as well, making them turn against each other
for whatever reason. It's not exactly well scripted
so you never really know why people react the way
that they do, but I guess if I ask the writers they
will just say "oh, it's the voodoo curse that's
affecting them". In other words, a solid excuse for
poor writing skills and plot holes.

Then we have the acting, oh my god the acting. It's
just unbelievably bad. I guess I could have figured
that out before even watching the movie though since
the host of "Australia's Next Top Model" plays one
of the villains - seriously. That should give you an
idea of just how poor the acting is in this movie.
The movie also looks very cheap and reeks of DTV,
I highly doubt that this will be getting a theatrical
release in any country.

Ultimately, Voodoo Lagoon is as silly as its title.
It's clichéd, it doesn't make much sense for most of
the time, it's ludicrous and it's ridiculously cheesy.
I'm dreading Australia's next movie with the same
topic (cleverly titled "Worst Fears"), but hopefully
that will be better than this. It seems with Aussie
horror flicks, they're either a hit or a miss (Wolf
Creek and Undead are two of the hits while Safety
In Numbers is a miss), and this is definitely a miss.
Don't watch this, it's mind-numbingly bad.

Some minor bruises and flesh-wounds.

Well, it didn't make the movie worse but it didn't
exactly help either.

Terrible Aussie horror movie with an old and dull
concept and a confusing story-line which leads to a
hilariously bad ending. I can't believe this movie
even got made. I mean, after having read the poor
script filled with plot holes, you'd think that no
one would even touch this. But I guess it was low
budget, and anyone with a camera seems to be able
to get their homemade horror flicks released these
days. Just skip this one.
