After the brutal mass murder of Miguel's family,
Miguel gets his hands on an amulet which holds the
power of calling a man-eating beast, a winged
serpent. When the cops are unable to arrest the
murderers of Miguel's family, Miguel decides to
take matters into his own hands and calls upon
the wicked beast. But when vengeance finally
consumes him, it seems as if there is no way to
stop the creature from killing.

Every once in a while, a creature feature comes
along that turns out to be surprisingly entertaining.
Cry Of The Winged Serpent is one of these. With a
decent-looking CGI-monster and a cool concept, this
amusingly cheesy creature feature turned out to be
quite the hoot. Sure, it's Sci-Fi channel quality
and the plot isn't exactly original, but for once
the creature is actually in focus. This is not one
of those lame creature features where the creature
only appears for like 5 seconds throughout the
entire movie, the winged serpent actually has a lot
of on-screen time - and as I said before, it looks
less fake than it probably should.

Once again we have bad guys vs good guys vs creature.
This time the story revolves around two cops who are
trying to finally arrest a big drug dealer/murderer,
but when they're unable to do so, a 22-year old man
named Miguel decides to take matter into his own
hands. Literarily. See, he has an amulet that can
call upon a horrifying beast - and man is this beast
cool-looking or what. The movie sure delivers what
the title promises - a winged serpent. It's basically
a giant dragon/bird/snake with massive teeth - now
how cool is that for a creature?!

Calling this horror feels kind of wrong though seeing
as how, while the creature does kill lots of people,
none of the deaths are very spectacular. There is no
gore to be found in here and it'll probably end up
getting a PG or PG-13 rating in the states. It's one
of those creature features that feels more like an
action comedy than a horror flick. Yes, a comedy. Why?
Because it knows that it's cheesy and it plays on
that full out, which is probably the main strength
in here. Just like with Basilisk: The Serpent King
(wait, are these connected?), the humour is a nice
relief even if it's not necessarily laugh-out-loud funny.

Ultimately, Cry Of The Winged Serpent is exactly
what it promises. It doesn't feel low budget (in
fact, it looks up to par with many theatrical
horror flicks), it's got some decent actors, and
it's just really entertaining. If you enjoy the
occasional cheesy creature feature, I can most
definitely recommend this one.

Two goreless impalements is all we get.

Well, we all know it's campy like in all movies of
this kind so there's no point in me saying that.

Amusing little creature feature that delivers what
it promises and more. It plays on the fact that it
knows that it's cheesy which makes it all so much
more entertaining. Naturally, it's no masterpiece
but it's better than one would expect it to be so
if these kind of movies are your cup of tea, this
movie is strongly recommended.
