A young
reporter with a morbid obsession for the
macabre stumbles onto a small magic act where a
wizard kills women on stage in very gory manors,
only to unveil moments later that the women are
in fact still alive. At least until the next day,
the reporter soon realizes that the girls in the
show all end up dead the next day and decides to
investigate further into the matter.

I generally don't like to watch remakes before
I've seen the original but, well, let's be honest
here, I simply don't have the time to do so
anymore so unless I've all ready seen the original,
I most likely won't see it. At least not for
another good few years. The Wizard of Gore is
one movie that never really interested me even
though I have it on DVD since several years back.
Don't ask me why but I never took the time to
sit down and watch it, and here I am with a
lackluster film said to be a big improvement over
the original and I'm feeling even less enticed
to see the old cult flick.
Not knowing much about the plot at all, I headed
in with absolutely no expectations. I mean, the
last Kasten movie I saw was All Souls Day and
that wasn't overly impressive and Crispin Glover
said that he only agreed to be in this movie since
he needed the money so of course I was a bit
sceptic but since I didn't know much about it
I went in with a relatively open mind. The result?
Well there were positives and negatives to be
found in here. Crispin Glover is brilliant and
outshines all of his fellow cast members, the
story is somewhat refreshing and it doesn't feel
like a remake at all. However, the movie was a
bit all over the place and when the movie was over
I still didn't know exactly what was going on.
It's a very confusing movie and the red line is
very thin - I suspect that they wanted it this
way but it's definitely difficult to stay interested
in a story that doesn't make any sense.
While not as silly as I had anticipated it to be,
The Wizard of Gore takes itself so seriously
that it becomes unintentionally silly on ocation.
The movie's obviously pretty low-budget and
I have to say that they've done a good job making
it look more expensive than it is though. Anyway,
in the end this movie had its ups and downs,
unfortunately more downs than ups for me but
I'm sure that fans of the original will eat this
up since it's both gory and bizarre. It's like
an acid-trip gone horribly wrong, kind of like
Shrooms only without the paranoid teens.

We get guts, decapitations, slashings and a whole
lot more. I don't want to spoil it for you.

Bizarre rock music and some decent background
music. Nothing impressive.

Mediocre and confusing, but potentially interesting
story. Unfortunately it's never actually that
interesting but it had the potential to be. For
fans of the original, you may enjoy it even though
I personally haven't seen the original and I'm
sure some of you gore hounds out there will love
it, it just didn't do much for me.
